Isles Shock Devils At The Rock

Your New York Islanders met the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center last night.  They had about 13 regulars suited up to play while the Islanders had about 4 regulars in their line up.  The remainder of the team was comprised of BST's and Isles prospects.

Despite what the rosters said, the Isles came out with a much better effort than they brought in the Calgary games.  After taking an early lead, the Devils fought back only to be answered by an Islanders team who were still learning about each other in the line up.  The Isles pulled off a 5-3 win in hostile territory against Brodeur and a Devils team with something to prove.  When I watch Reinhart, Pulock, Pedan and Mayfield, I understand the difference between rookies and seasoned prospects who are waiting for their chance to play in the NHL.  As young D-Men, they have shown some good things already and expect that they are only going to get better. Their young defense played pretty well despite a few miscues while Kevin Poulin (20/23) kept his cool and looked better as the game went on, despite some tough PK time and point blank opportunities for the Devils.

Scoring for New York came from familiar faces and those not so familiar.  Josh Bailey had 2 SHG's, Anders Lee and new comer, Peter Regin also had goals in the game.  Eric Boulton, sprung from the penalty box took a pass in stride from Lee and put it behind Brodeur with effortless grace.  No really, it was a thing of beauty and I was glad the enforcer gets an occasional ray of sunshine to come his way.

In the second of three fights between Brett Gallant and Krys Barch, the two did something that even the NHL would take notice of.  They gently removed each others helmets prior to the fight, absolving each other of an officials accessed penalty (if you remove your own) before they proceeded to do battle on the ice.  Kevin Schultz of IPB said, "Interesting to note Brett Gallant and Krys Barch took each other's helmets off before second fight to skirt rule. No penalty called."  Check out the video from our friends at IslesEnforcers.com.  Gallant took 2 out of 3 on my scorecard and showed he was a capable tough guy for the organization when called upon.

Oh, and if you haven't been getting excited about Strome, I don't know what to tell you.  A little more experience and time in the NHL with J.T. and the Isles will own the best tandem in the NHL, not the Penguins with Crosby & Malkin.  Brock Nelson and Anders Lee continue to show even more depth from the Isles talent pool.

The Devils will get their rematch of the Isles on Saturday when they make their way to the Barclays Center for the first ever NHL game at the future home of the New York Islanders in Brooklyn.  Corey Schneider will get the start for New Jersey per Tom Gulitti.
